DPP Advised To Withdraw Some Charges Against Alleged Kidnap Kingpin Evans

The trial of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a Evans and three others on fresh kidnapping charges was stalled on Thursday at an Ikeja High Court. The arraignment was stalled due to multiple filing of the seven-count charge of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, attempt to kidnap and sales and transfer of firearms by the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP’s error was pointed out during the proceedings by Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans’ defence counsel and said, "If the DPP files without withdrawing, I will file a motion for dismissal of the case.”

The video of Philomina Chieshe, a sales clerk in the office of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Benue state, saying a snake mysteriously swallowed the missing N36m, has surfaced. The video was released about 24 hours after Chieshe denied that she never said, the money was swallowed by snake. She had told CNN that the claim was fabricated and that nobody questioned her about the missing money. “I wonder why they are personalising the case? I did not say any money was swallowed by a snake,” Chieshe had told CNN. In the new video released by The Sun, Chieshe told board members that the money got missing in a “mysterious” way.

There are strong indications that the University of Lagos may postpone its 50th convocation ceremonies scheduled to commence on February 19, as the effects of the ongoing strike embarked upon by non-academic staff at the university bite harder. It was gathered by Eyes Of Lagos that the workers, under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the Non- Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Associated Institutions and the National Association of Academic Technologists, have shut some administrative buildings on the university campus. The Benue state police command has confirmed the death of one of the four police officers that went missing after an attack on a police patrol troop by suspected herdsmen in Ayilamo, Logo Local government area of Benue State, on Saturday February 10th. Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Monday 12th February, 2018 has arraigned one Adejare Sonde, a former banker before Justice A. A. Akinyemi of the State High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State on a twelve-count charge bordering on stealing, forgery and uttering. The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him. In view of his plea, prosecution counsel, Cosmos Ugwu prayed the court for a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in prison custody. However, counsel to the defendant, E. E. Jacob informed the court of a bail application already filed before the court. He thereafter prayed the court to allow the defendant remain in the EFCC's custody pending the hearing of the bail application. Justice Akinyemi, while adjourning the case to Friday February 16, 2018 for trial and hearing of bail application, granted the defense prayer and ordered that the defendant be remanded in EFCC's custod

A passenger plane with 71 people on board has crashed after taking off from Moscow's Domodedovo airport. All on board the Saratov Airlines plane were feared dead after it crashed on Sunday near Ramenskoe town, about 40km from Moscow's second-largest airport. Emergency services confirmed finding debris of the Antonov An-148 on the outskirts of the capital, Russia's Tass news agency reported. President Donald Trump through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a donation of $89 million in additional development assistance to Nigeria. This he said was in continuation of US’ support for development goals outlined in a Development Objectives Assistance Agreement signed between both countries. A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday by the US embassy stated that USAID collaborated with the Nigerian Ministry of Budget and National Planning, the Nigerian Ministries of Health, Agriculture, Power, and Education, and state-level government counterparts among others to structure the bilateral assistance agreement, which runs through 2020.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the compulsory retirement of Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court and the dismissal from office of Justice O.O Tokode of the Benin Division of the Federal High Court following recommendations from the National Judicial Council (NJC). EFCC To Reopen 14 Former Governors’ Corruption Cases (NAMES)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to reopen the corruption cases of about 14 former governors and other top government officials, LEADERSHIP Weekend can report. It was gathered that the sums of money in the corruption cases involving some governors, their family members and some influential Nigerians are put at over N183 billion. LEADERSHIP Weekend recalls that in July 2016, the minister of Justice and attorney-general of the federation (AGF), Shehu Malami, had written to both the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practicies and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) requesting the case files of 31 former governors being investigated or prosecuted by the anti-graft agencies. It was gathered that Senate President Bukola Saraki (former governor of Kwara State); a former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, and Senate minority leader, Godswill Akpabio who was Akwa Ibom State governor are some of the names of people facing corruption charges.

THE Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello on Friday said the state government had set aside 15,000 hectares of land to implement the cattle colony policy of the Federal government Governor Bello during a visit to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said it was necessary that the State provides the land to accommodate the herdsmen and contribute to ending the frequent clashes between farmers and herders. Among the seized vehicles include 4 Rolls Royce, 1 Porche Panamera, 1 Jaguar, 1 Bentley, 2 Lexus Jeep , 2 G wagon, 1 Toyota Land Cruiser, 5 Toyota Corolla, 7 Mercedes Benz among others mostly 2017 models. These 31 assorted Vehicles alone have a duty paid value of One Billion, Four Hundred and Twenty Nine Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty One Naira, Fifty kobo (N1,429,953,941.50) only.

Nigerian Army Gives Hot Lines As Its Set To Begin Operation 'cat Race' To Tackle herdsmen/farmers clashes

The Nigerian Army said on Wednesday that it will conduct a special exercise tagged: “Ayem Akpatuma’’ – “Cat Race” to tackle recurring herdsmen/farmers clashes and criminal activities in Benue, Taraba, and four other states. The other states are: Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger and Kaduna states. The exercise, according to Maj.-Gen. David Ahmadu, the Chief of Training and Operations, will commence on February 15 and end on March 31. Ahmadu, who briefed newsmen on the exercise, said it will address emerging security challenges within the 1 and 3 Divisions including Headquarters, Army Records, Guards Brigade and 707 Special Forces Brigade “Areas of Responsibility.’’ He said it will also aid civil authority to address those challenges.
