NCC Vows To Curb Hate Speeches In Social Media

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it is partnering the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to ensure hate speeches, particularly in the social media, are reduced to the barest minimum. The executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of the NCC, Engr. Umar Garba Danbatta, made this known in Calabar Wednesday while opening a two-day workshop on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Utilization and Sustainability for South South Zone, organised by the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), a unit within the NCC.

Arsenal enjoyed a record turnover during 2016-17, taking an incredible £422.8million – an increase of more than 20 per cent on the previous year. The Gunners also increased their profits for the year from £2.9m to an impressive £44.6m as they missed out on the top four but won the FA Cup under Arsene Wenger. Arsenal have, however, seen their cash reserves fall from £226.5m to £180.1m, while their wage bill rose by £1m to £195.4m. The club spent almost half (47 per cent) of their total football revenue on wages during 2016-17.

Senates Approves Death Sentence For Kidnapping

THE Senate has approved death sentence for abduction, wrongful restraints or wrongful confinement for ransom. The upper chamber also approved 30 years jail term for anybody that colluded with an abductor. This followed the passage of a bill on abduction, wrongful restraints or wrongful confinement for ransom. The upper chamber, which did clause by clause consideration of the report by its committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, adopted the clause which specified death sentence for kidnapping.

Police Arrests Man Who Helped Rescue 7 Kidnapped Victims Inside Creek

According to reports on PM Express, The residents of Igando, Lagos were shock after the police from Igando Division arrested a young man simply known as ‘Egbon’, who led the Vigilante group to the creek and exposed the kidnappers den which led to the rescue of seven victims. The arrest and detention of Egbon (real name not yet known) had triggered negative reactions especially from those living in Akesan, Egan Igando and Badore areas who knew the role he played in unmasking the criminal hide out in the river line. P.M.EXPRESS learnt that the police were not happy that Egbon took the vigilante group to the creek instead of the police where seven victims were recently rescued. The vigilante group also recovered some arms, handed them over to the police and the kidnappers were temporarily dislodged.

According to a statement posted on their social media platform, the anti-graft agency said the men were arrested after they refused to honor an invitation by the Commission to explain their roles as alleged in a petition in respect of bail-out funds released to the state.

Two Nigerians and a Cambodian were on Thursday,  tried for drug trafficking by Phnom Penh Municipal Court after being caught selling crystal methamphetamine to an undercover police officer. The accused, Samson Ifechi Friday, 29, and Onwuka Chibuzor, 33, and But Sobin, 26, were arrested by anti-drug police in April in Chom Chao commune, after which police seized two small packages of crystal methamphetamine. Deputy prosecutor Kol Bun said on April 3, police arrested Mr Sobin and confiscated 11.41 grams of meth from him. Mr Sobin then aided police in a sting operation. Mr Sobin called an unknown woman, the drug ringleader, who then hired a Nigerian man to deliver more drugs to him.

Beijing Orders North Korean Companies Operating in China to Shut down

China announced on Thursday that all North Korean companies operating in the country will have to shut down by January as Beijing applies UN sanctions imposed following Pyongyang’s sixth nuclear test. The announcement comes days after China confirmed that it will apply another major part of the sanctions: a limit on exports of refined petroleum products to North Korea starting October 1 and a ban on textiles from its neighbor. However, sanctions spare entities involved in non-commercial activities or public utility infrastructure projects that do not generate profits. Beijing appears to be running out of patience with North Korea’s nuclear antics — the last test earlier this month triggered an earthquake that was felt in northeast China.

UN chief Antonio Guterres exhorted Myanmar's leaders to end the "nightmare" faced by Rohingya refugees fleeing an army campaign, after at least 19 people drowned with scores more feared dead when a boat carrying Rohingya families capsized off Bangladesh. More than half a million Rohingya Muslims have poured into Bangladesh in the last month, fleeing a vicious Myanmar military crackdown on Rohingya rebels that has gutted villages across northern Rakhine state. Scores have drowned while trying to cross waters separating the two countries, while those who survive face new dangers as they cram into squalid refugee settlements where food and clean water are in short supply.

A renowned Russian hacker arrested by Spanish authorities on a U.S. warrant, reportedly said Thursday he worked for Russian President Vladimir Putin's party. Peter Levashov told a Madrid court that he worries he would be tortured and possibly killed if extradited to the U.S., Reuters, citing a report by the RIA news agency, reported. “If I go to the U.S., I will die in a year. They want to get information of a military nature and about the United Russia party,” he said, according to the news agency. “I will be tortured, within a year I will be killed, or I will kill myself.” Levashov, who is also known as Peter Severa, said he has worked for the United Russia party for a decade.

Intafact Hero’s Foundation N82m to budding entrepreneurs

Intafact Hero’s Foundation Kickstart programme; a CSI initiative of the Intafact Beverages Limited has empowered 40 budding entrepreneurs with the sum of 82 million naira. The initiative which started in 2016 is in its 2nd edition. The programme is targeted at young Nigerians residing in the participating states: Abia, Anambra, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu and Imo states.  This year’s journey started with over 5000 persons as 5,024 applications were received. But based on the strength of the business proposals submitted, 130 successful applicants were shortlisted for a one week rigorous training after which applicants submitted their business plans to a panel of judges who carefully scrutinized the business plans to arrive at the 40 lucky awardees.

A Nigerian lady identified as Vera Udechukwu, who resides in Ghana with her Nigerian husband, has been killed barely two weeks after her traditional wedding in August. Facebook user, Onyebuchi Ememanka, who shared the sad story online, is demanding an inquiry into what could have led to the death of the young lady.
