Reprisal Attack: Tiv Farmers Kill 78 Cows, Injure 18

Seventy three cows were killed while 18 other cows were injured in an early morning attack on Yamadaga village, Kadarko community in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State by suspected cattle rustlers. The cattle rustlers invaded Kadarko community around 4:00 am on Sunday, January 29 shooting into the air. They were reported to have kidnapped two persons, chasing other cows into the bush in the process. The victims of the attack who were mostly herdsmen claimed that the masterminds of the attack were Tiv farmers and that it was a reprisal attack.

6 Telecom companies to lose operating licences for masking of international telephone calls - NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it will impose the maximum possible penalties on any of its licencees implicated in masking of international telephone calls.  The regulatory body announced this on Monday in Lagos, in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Mr Tony Ojobo.  The statement said it was likely that the operating licences of some of the interconnect exchange and other licencees involved in the practice would either be revoked or suspended in the coming week.

FUTO Shutdown As Non-academic Staff Begin Strike

Academic and other official activities were yesterday grounded at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) by protesting members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU). The aggrieved workers, under the auspices of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising of Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Scientists (NAATS), said they were following the directive of the national body. Construction Works Begin At Lekki Deep Sea Port

Major construction work has commenced at the Lekki deep sea port site located at the Lagos Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), Ibeju-Lekki. With the construction of the main breakwater for the port, a major step towards the actualization of the proposed project has been taken. The management of Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise (LPLE) disclosed this during the monitoring visit of the Acting Director General of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, (ICRC) to assess the progress of the project, which held on Friday, 26 January 2018. Speaking during the visit, the General Manager, Projects, of LPLE, Mr. Steven Heukelom noted that the breakwater construction is one of the largest components of the port construction. Kano State Government in Nigeria has handed over 150 hectares of land to Dangote Group for the development of a US $150m Dangote/Black Rhino solar power plant in Zakirai, Gabasawa local government area. Nigeria’s foreign Reserve hit 4-year high as investors inject $5.23 billion

Nigeria’s external reserves rose  to $40.33 billion last week, the highest in four years. Meanwhile investors have injected $5.23 billion through the Investors and Exporters (I&E) foreign exchange (forex) window in four weeks while the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has intervened in the forex market with $986 million since the beginning of the year. Data from the CBN website showed that external reserves rose to $40.33 billion on Thursday, January 25, from $38.765 billion on December 29, 2017. Thus, the reserves have risen by $1.56 billion this year. The $40.33 billion reserves represent the highest since January 2014 when the reserves dropped to $40.6 billion from $42.84 billion in December 2013. The steady rise in the external reserve, from July 7 last year, is occasioned by improved foreign exchange inflow occasioned by increase in crude oil price, dollar inflow from foreign portfolio investors facilitated by the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window introduced in

India, Nigeria to mark 60 years of relations as trade hits $9.4bn in 2017  – Nigeria and India would mark 60 years of diplomatic relations in 2018 since the establishment of such relations in 1958. Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Nagabhushana Reddy, said this at an event to mark the 69th Republic Day of India on Friday in Abuja. Reddy said that both countries had over the years remained strategic partners with improved levels of cooperation between them with a bilateral trade volume of 9.4 billion dollars in 2017. “India is now the largest trading partner of Nigeria globally and Nigeria is the largest trading partner of India in Africa with bilateral trade of 9.4 billion dollars last year.”

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has raised the alarm over potential cyber-attacks targeting banking, health and other systems, power and transportation systems, as well as other critical national infrastructure in the country. A statement signed by the agency and made available to journalists said its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team (CERRT), in conjunction with other industry stakeholders, in their efforts at ensuring a safe and secure cyberspace, have intercepted some signals of potential cyber-attacks. The statement signed by the director-general of NITDA, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), other government establishments, the organised private sector and the general public to be vigilant and proactive as far as security is concerned, saying the need for extra precautionary measures to guard against cyber-attacks cannot be overemphasized.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, yesterday said the Federal Government has spent over N1 Billion on Ekwueme’s burial. This is even as all the roads leading to Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State have been given facelifts in readiness for the burial of the late Second Republic Vice President, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme on Friday.  The roads are Amansea-Amawbia; Nise –Agulu; Umunze-Ajali; Nnewi-Igboukwu-Ekwulobia; and Akokwa (Imo State) –Uga Ekwueme died in a London hospital last year and programmes for his burial started on January 19, 2018.  The Minister of Labour and Employment and member of the national burial committee, Dr. Chris Ngige, after visiting Oko to inspect preparations for the burial, expressed satisfaction with the level of work already done.

JUSTICE? High court orders ex-navy chief to pay N9m to herdsman for seizing 42 cows, read full detail

An Ilorin High Court has ordered a retired navy chief, Vice- Admiral Samuel Olajide Afolayan, to pay N9 million being the cost of damages and for detaining 42 cows belonging to a Fulani herdsman, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, illegally and unconstitutionally. According to Vanguard, the verdict, delivered on January 9, 2018, indicated that the retired admiral was also ordered to pay N500,000 for each day of default of the judgement debt. Justice Adeyinka Sikiru Oyinloye gave the judgment in suit NO.KWS/83M/2017. The herdsman, Abdullahi, had sought the declaration of the court that the seizure and/or detention of his 60 cows by the respondent was bizarre, unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional. He also sought the respondent’s unconditionally release of the cows with immediate effect, and another order that the respondent should tender unreserved apology to be published in two national dailies within two weeks of the judgment.

Lekki Concession Company Limited has announced that it will increase the toll tariffs being charged at the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza on Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge Toll Plaza with effect from Thursday, February 1. The LCC said in a statement that the upward review followed “extensive consultations held with stakeholders in the Eti-Osa/Lekki-Epe Expressway of Lagos State. Although details of the new rate were not disclosed in the statement, the firm said N100 would be paid by any driver of a mini commuter bus using the Lekki-Epe toll plaza, which is an increase of N20 over the N80 currently being charged.

The Principal Staff Officer, Drugs Demand Reduction in the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Mr Ladan Hashim has revealed that about 72 young women and men have gone mad in the past three years over drug abuse in Zamfara state. Mr Ladan, who spoke at a Radio Nigeria's Pride FM programme 'Ya Muka Kwana' monitored in Gusau on Wednesday,  said the consumption of drugs by youths including young women is at an alarming rate and something had to be done urgently to stop the menace. He said in 2015 about 27 young men had become mad. Likewise in 2016 and 2017 45 young men including 5 ladies became mentally deranged over drugs abuse.

Disturbed by the unwholesome behaviour of some police men after consumption of alcoholic beverages offered them by members of the public, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Edgal Imohimi, appeals to the good people of Lagos state to desist from offering or giving alcoholic drinks to policemen in Lagos state command.
