"Nigeria Customs generates in N5.5 billion daily" - Controller General

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said on Thursday that its revenue generation has increased to the region of N5.5 billion daily. The Comptroller-General (CGC), Hameed Ali, made this known during a working visit to the headquarters of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) in Lagos. The CGC, who was represented at the event by the Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) and Customs Coordinator in-charge of Zone A, Kaycee Ekekezie, said the feat was made possible as a result of the automation of customs operations at the ports. According to the customs boss, the increase in revenue generation has helped in the prompt payment of salaries of workers of the NCS and made the organisation a critical contributor to the nation’s treasury in terms of revenue generation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday denied having a server where the results of the February 23 presidential election were uploaded. INEC stated this position at the ongoing Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja . The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are challenging the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election. The petitioners claimed that the results they obtained from the INEC server indicated that Mr Abubakar won the poll with an over six million votes margin. Through their lawyers led by Levy Uzoukwu, the PDP and Mr Abubakar asked the tribunal to compel INEC to grant them access to the server and smart card readers used in the conduct of the election. But counsel representing INEC, Yunus Usman, in a counter affidavit asked the court to dismiss the application. “They are asking us to bring something we do not have,” Mr Usman said.

Ihim announced his defection on Thursday shortly after the ninth Assembly was inaugurated by the deputy governor of the state, Gerald Irona. British Home Secretary Sajid Javid revealed he had signed the request yesterday - with the matter to now go before the courts tomorrow. The Lagos State Government has warned against the indiscriminate closure of public roads by Communities and Construction companies in the State without recourse to the Ministry of Transportation for approval. A statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Olufemi Salaam cautioned against the trend, insisting that Section 44 (2) of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 grants only the Honourable Commissioner or the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transportation rights to approve such closure.

The Presidency has denied reports claiming President Buhari has approved the formation of State police structures. Reports were rife online earlier today with claims that the President after receiving the Report of the Presidential Panel on the Reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), gave the approval for the creation of a police force for states and local governments. A statement released by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, this evening, said although the report suggested the introduction of state and local government police, the President is yet to assent to the recommendation.

Eke, allegedly defrauded his victims through an alleged ponzi scheme by inducing his victims to invest in his Swissgolden packages, through his company, Micheno Multi-purpose Cooperative Society, under the false pretence of paying them 80 per cent return on investment within just 40 days. With this enticing bait, Eke duped so many people through the scheme, and when his investors started calling for their capitals and expected interest, he made himself unreachable, both by telephone and in person.

A medical association close to the protesters said that at least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured. Ex-NIMASA DG jailed 7 years; gets N42 million option of fine

A Federal High Court on Monday sentenced Callistus Obi, a former Acting Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), to seven years imprisonment for a N136 million fraud. Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, in Lagos, however, gave Mr Obi an option of N42 million fine. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Mr Obi on an eight-count charge of fraud along with one Alu Dismas, who was an aide to a former Director-General of NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi. Also charged were two companies, Grand Pact Ltd. and Global Seal Investment Ltd., as third and fourth defendants. On May 23, the court convicted the defendants after it found them guilty of allegations contained in the charge.

The Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade has ordered his former aides, including commissioners to surrender all the official vehicles still in their possession. A statement signed by the newly reappointed Chief of Staff to the governor, Martins Orim, made available to our correspondent, asked the aides to return the vehicles within 78 hours to avoid embarrassment. According to the statement, “All former commissioners, special advisers, special assistants and other former appointees of the Cross River State Government, including chairmen and members of commissions, boards, agencies, governing councils and Local Governments Security Council chairmen, who were issued official vehicles are hereby directed to return same to the office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor within 78 hours.”

Governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State has directed all financial institutions having relationship with the state government not to honour any withdrawal instruction by cheques, transfers or in any other form. The directive was announced in a statement by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media Affairs, Steve Osuji, in Owerri, the state capital on Thursday. According to him, no financial mandates or any form of financial instruction should be treated and all outstanding financial instructions already with banks and financial institutions should be put on hold.
